Full Text
Charleston, July 1.
Rainbow.—One of the most brilliant and perfect rainbows we remember ever to have witnessed, made its sudden appearance in the Heavens yesterday evening, at about 6 o'clock, extending its magnificent arch in a direction from South-west to North-east. It seemed to convey in its blended lines of pure and harmonizing light, a token and a tone from the mighty elements above us, that beneficence no less than a wonderful beauty can emanate only from the bosom of peace—the blissful source of every blessing: and which though passing shadows may occasionally dim, and sometimes chill its surface, retains, uninfluenced and unimpairable within itself, the deep fountain of its holiest and best joys—joys which the mere world in which we move can neither give nor take away, though it may sometimes sully their purity, or tinge them gladness with a reflection of its own sources of sin and its attendant sadness.
'Like some tall cliff that lifts its awful form,
Swells from the vale, and midway leaves the storm
Though round its breast the rolling clouds are spread,
Eternal sunshine settles on its head.'
In the present commotion of the political elements around us, we might, fitting our spirits to the Author of all good gifts, imbibe the moral and the lesson which seems to live and breathe to the contemplators of the beautiful creation of the elements thus visited us yesterday evening, and thus profit by the wise counsel received to come to the bosoms of men.
