Full Text

The End of the World at Hand.—The advocates of the second Advent doctrine, in this city, and round about, are of firm belief that that great event is about transpiring. It is now set down likely to happen during all this month up to the 22d, and many there are who are making preparations for the occasion. In many instances, business has been thrown up, and the consummation of their faith in the doctrine, is the only thing thought of or cared for by the disciples of Father Miller's creed. And we notice by our exchanges, that a like state of things exists in many parts of the country. In Brooklyn, a Mr. Ducker, a lighterman in one of the largest houses, discharged all his workmen on Saturday last declaring that he should have no further services for them after the 21st, and possibly not after the 16th. In our neighboring town of Hamburg, Mr. Thomas Fish, a merchant, and keeper of a temperance hotel, has taken down his sign, and declares that the time for doing temporal business is past Many others, have also, suspended all business operations and are patiently awaiting the event. It is not a little strange, that in these times, so many should have their minds thus affected and influenced by an intangibility in regard to time, and upon a matter in which the most elaborate and labored calculations have heretofore so frequently failed.—Buffalo Gazette.
