IMPRISONED
IN A MINE
Ely, Nev., Dec. 18—Nearly 1,000
feet down in the shaft of the Alpha
mine, where they have been imprisoned
for 10 days, the mine superintendent and two workmen seem fated
to remain for at least several days.
It was discovered that the ground
at the point of the original cave-in
was still moving and fear that any
hour may bring an increase in that
movement and occasion another slide
that the bulkhead will not be able to
resist, has necessitated a stoppage of
the work of clearing the shaft until
the run can be checked.
While the entombed men have been
in comparatively little danger here-
tofore, their position would be grave
should a second slide occur.
Supplied with cots, sent down in
pieces through a six-inch pipe, and
with food and water in the same man-
ner, the men are comfortable in their
prison deep in the earth, but with
the increasing danger of another slide
cutting off their source of supply
dangling over them.
