During the reign of Jack Cade-ism in England, a few centuries ago, every gentlemanly dressed man, and every lady-looking woman, who unfortunately fell in with the levellers, were sure to pay the penalty of being well dressed, with their lives. In our days a scene somewhat similar occurs, except as to the killing part, for which they are hardly yet ripe enough. We allude to the horrid imprecation and coarse ribaldry emitted by our democrats against Mr. Pinkney, the American minister at the court of London, and his lady, because he took a glass of wine with one nobleman, and ate roast beef with another, and because she thought proper to wear a geranium velvet petticoat!

The geranium velvet petticoat!
There is treason in the very name—nay, it certainly is petty-treason against the rights of man! If Mrs. P. had worn a geranium velvet coat, it might have been pardoned, as being quite outré and resembling the costume of the Paris fishwomen when they assisted at an execution a la lanterne; but to wear a geranium velvet petticoat is monstrous. Besides, Mrs. P. was to blame in another instance. Instead of wearing a feather and jewels on her head, she should have stuck them through her nose a la sauvage, and this would have established her reputation forever with our democratic Tammany's.
