Full Text

HON. W. H. SEWARD, having completed his South American trip, returns to the quiet of his Auburn home in the State of New York. He is enabled to look back through a score and a half of years spent in public life, and the retrospect, though not without evidences that the best of men have their weaknesses, cannot, upon the whole, but be productive of pleasure and satisfaction. He has rendered the country distinguished service, for which his name will be honored. Especially in diplomacy has he commanded the gratitude and admiration of the country and the world, and in this line of statesmanship, he has scarcely had a superior. If he has not escaped criticism, and there have been those who questioned his motives, the history of his protracted official career will rise above the common standard, and his latter days will afford many pleasurable reflections, and his fame will be cherished by many patriotic American hearts.
