How It Looks To Me
By RAY ALEA
This being my first article as
your legislative representative, I
hope you will overlook my ama-
teur way of doing things, but
one has to start sometimes.
let this be it.
From informa-
tion received from
National
Headquarters things are picking
up in tempo. The Senate Com.
mittee has reported S-355 but as
yet we have no information on
the amendments made on this
bill. This much is known—8.8
percent increase for postal em-
ployees with complete elimina.
tion of the first and second
grades and additional credit of
two grades given employees who
entered service after July 1,
1945 and the date as set forth
by S 355 which is not available
at this time.
The House, in my opinion, is
getting a better bill HR-244 and
at this time I do not wish to
elaborate on this measure be.
cause quite a great deal of in.
formation is lacking, but we
should have something on this
before the week is out.
The Senate passed an annual
leave measure which will pro-
vide a sliding annual leave scale
in accordance with the number
of years service—less than two
years, 13 days; over two and
under 15 years, 20 days; 15 years
and over, 26 days. Sick leave
to be 13 days without limit on
accumulation.
I am confident we will receive
a pay raise but just how soon is
hard to predict but I do believe
that every member and his wife
can help bring it about sooner
if they will begin hitting Sena-
tors and Representatives with
letters, cards and telegrams tell.
ing them of their individual
problems and asking him to
exert every effort in bringing the
bill before the House and Senate
for an early vote. Remember,
private industry has been giv.
ing salary increases for over a
year and the Postal worker is
still like he was three years
ago. The delay seems to be
tied to the fact that our bill is
being considered together with
that of all Federal employees.
otherwise from word received
from our Rep. Lantaff, the Post
al salary measure would have
been considered long before
now. Now is the time for all
members to spend three cents
and let his congressman know
how he feels in order to show
that we are interested in what
takes place in our government.
Your letters will give him more
to work on, and in the end you
will win what you fight for
