Full Text

Big Shift In Maine Vote.

William T. Cobb, the Republican governor of Maine, was re-elected by a plurality of 8,500 over his Democratic opponent, Davis, whereas two years ago Cobb's plurality was 26,816. The Republican plurality at this election is the smallest received in twenty-four years. The four Republican congressmen were re-elected, but also by largely reduced pluralities and Littlefield, who was the especial target of organized labor, had about 950 plurality to his credit or a loss of over 3,000 votes. On the other hand, the Democrats of all but two of the twenty-two cities in the state took every county office in two of the largest counties. The principal issue was the Sturgis prohibition law and its enforcement, and although the state legislature will remain Republican it is considered likely that the law will be resubmitted and that this election will mark the end of prohibition in Maine.
