Salem, Marion Co., Ill., Jan. 3, 1860.
Correspondence of The N. Y. Tribune.
At the last Presidential election Fremont received in this County only 30 votes out of 1,800. More recently—at the election for United States Senate—Mr. Lincoln received 575 votes, and now our most intelligent Republicans think the County good for at least 1,000.
In this town, where no Republican party was formed until recently—at the late election for Aldermen—three out of five are elected as Republicans. Until two or three years ago THE TRIBUNE was unknown here, while now near 50 copies are taken.
The revival of religion in Ireland is not more remarkable than the revival of the spirit of the Fathers in poor old Egypt; and it is now the most hopeful and promising missionary ground in all our land.
Much of this is due to the faithful laborer in the late Senatorial canvass, to that noble Kentucky Republican, Abraham Lincoln.
Illinois is as sure to vote for the Republican candidate for President in the next election as Massachusetts or New-York.
