That Bridge.—The much needed and oft-talked about bridge across Mill Creek, at the upper end of this city will probably be built before long. The County Commissioners have from time to time been censured for not taking some action in this matter; but this has been without just cause, from the fact that the road leading in that direction has never been laid out as a county road, and therefore the Commissioners have had no authority to invest county funds in building a bridge there. In fact this may be said in justification of the Commissioners in relation to improvements upon any of the roads in the valley; for we believe there is not one regularly "laid out" county road in the county. We are informed that several petitions for roads will be presented to the Commissioners at their meeting on Monday next, and among them one praying for the location of a road leading from this city in the direction of the Coppel. The road once located, the Commissioners will be free to act, and we doubt not they will do so. The people of this city are eminently interested in the erection of this bridge, and from the fact that full two-thirds of the revenue which the county has heretofore received has come out of their pockets, it is but just and equitable that a fair proportion of the county funds should be expended in such manner as will be directly beneficial to them. At all events the bridge should be built as soon as possible, and if the county is unable to do the whole of the work without too much neglecting needed improvements in other portions of the county, in which the people here are interested as well, the deficit should be raised by the city or by subscription. The latter method would perhaps be best for the citizens, as the expenses incident to the organization of the city government will most likely be all that it can meet for the present year. We have heard gentlemen say they would subscribe liberally to such a work, provided the county would perform a reasonable proportion of it; and now that the only serious obstacle which has heretofore been in the way of the erection of this much needed bridge is about to be removed, we hope to see the work begun immediately.
