WASHINGTON. (P) - An immediate congressional investigation into waterfront tieups at Seattle and Puget Sound ports was ordered Tuesday by the House Interstate and Foreign Commerce Committee.
Chairman Wolverton said a subcommittee headed by Rep. Dolliver will open a three-day hearing in Seattle April 8.
Announcing the hearing, Wolverton said "Interruptions in the free flow of commerce have adversely affected interstate and foreign commerce impairing the defense effort and indirectly causing great inconvenience and economic loss not only to the people of the Pacific Northwest but also to the people of Alaska."
In addition to labor troubles, the subcommittee will look into non-scheduled air transportation between the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.
Wolverton said one cause of interruption in the flow of commerce was "the policy of the Civil Aeronautics Administration to eliminate non-scheduled carriers serving Alaska." He added: "It appears that little or no consideration has been given to the needs of the people in small communities and to small business generally in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska areas."
