Full Text
A gentleman from Lunenburg county, in this state, who accompanied some young men to Washington College, gives information that it has been the practice for some years, in the neighbourhood in which he lives, to pasture their wheat for the purpose of destroying the Hessian Fly; and that they find it answers the purpose intended. The practice was introduced there by Dr. Degraffenreidt, who pastures his wheat as late as the middle of April. Sheep is the animal used as they crop closer than any other.
An experiment was made some years ago in this county, by one or two persons, who pastured their wheat, believing it to be destroyed by the Fly; but in the Spring supposing that the wheat, from its appearance, might come to something, they did not plough it down as they had intended, and reaped about as good a crop as they would have expected if the wheat had not been injured by the Fly, and not been pastured. But the practice was not pursued. Would it not be well for our farmers generally to make the experiment next fall and winter, each on one small field or lot? Our climate and soil may differ so much from Lunenburg, that a practice which would succeed there, would not be useful here; but the experiment is certainly worth making especially as it has succeeded in some instances even among ourselves.
