Full Text

Extract of a Letter from on board the Medway, Calcutta, March 20, 1764, to a Gentleman at Edinburgh.

We were just going to sail for Madras, when we had Advices commanding our Stay here in order to protect this Settlement, as fresh Disturbances are gathering up the Country, another Power having been prevailed upon by Cosim Ali Cawn to join him, in order to try a second Campaign. However, we hope this will not produce any bad Effects, as our last Accounts from Madras give us Reason to hope that Cosim himself would soon be obliged to leave the Country, as his Stay must necessarily endanger his being taken Prisoner. It is now commonly computed, that of black and white People in our Interest, he has massacred in cold Blood about 4000, exclusive of the many destroyed in Battle.
