Full Text
It would be a curious, but perhaps an unprofitable task, if one should take the trouble to collect all the lies and slanders that have been invented by the Opposition against the President and his Cabinet, with the refutations and contradictions which have been promptly made. To be sure, it would be wading through a great deal of filth, but at the same time it would give a tolerable idea of the principles which actuate our opponents. There never was a political contest carried on, in which a greater disregard of everything like truth was manifested than is shown in the present by the devoted partisans of the Hero. And although it is his ipse dixit, that Truth is mighty and shall prevail, we very much fear, that, left to his friends, there would be great danger of its not even ever showing itself; much less would there be any probability of its going forth under their influence, conquering and to conquer.
As we have no time at present to enter into the proposed investigation, we request our friends to cast their eyes back upon the ground gone over and recollect the various charges that have been made against the Administration. They will meet a sickening catalogue of slander and calumnies—'gross and palpable.' All of which have been boldly and fearlessly met and disproved. They will find that cloud after cloud has been cleared away, and that notwithstanding the unceasing and untiring zeal of their foes, not one single fact has been proved, which can or ought in the least affect the character of the Administration.
