ARGENTINA COMES BACK TO THE FOLD
Recently, President Arturo Frondizi of Argentina, ordered Cuban diplomats to get out of the country. Argentina has broken diplomatic relations with communist Cuba.
This represents a reversal of President Frondizi's former position, when he defiantly defended the Argentine position at Punta Del Este when Argentina sided with five other nations, Brazil, Mexico, Chile, Ecuador and Bolivia to oppose the US-sponsored resolution ordering Cuba ousted from the Inter-American family.
The President of Argentina reversed himself as a result of pressure from the chiefs of the armed forces. They have demanded that he sever relations with Cuba immediately and that he fire Foreign Minister Miguel Carrano, who headed the Argentine delegation at the conference.
During the next weeks, it will be interesting to see what repercussions occur in Argentina as a result of severing relations with Cuba. Another matter which will bear watching is whether the President will now fire his Foreign Minister. It will be interesting now to note what happens in the other five countries who went along with Argentina in opposing the United States resolution. It is known that there is some unrest in these nations.
At any rate, the action of Argentina in breaking off with Castro represents a victory for the western nations in their struggle against Russian communism.
