NEWPORT, R. I.—(ANP)—The calm tranquility of this 316-year-old city was shattered over the past weekend by Ole Satchmo and fellow jazzmen during the three-day second annual Jazz Festival of Newport held at Freebody Stadium here.
An estimated $30,000 was grossed during the Friday-through-Sunday festival. Satchmo, the Duke and his band, Dave Brubeck's quartet, Coleman Hawkins, Roy Eldridge, Erroll Garner and Woody Herman who acted as master of ceremonies.
The festival began on Friday night with more than 5,000 attending while Saturday night an estimated 8,000 attended and 11,000 on Sunday night.
Friday night's show was tame compared to Saturday night, when Dinah Washington virtually stole the show for the night with her rendition of such numbers as 'A Foggy Day in London' and 'The Birth of the Blues,' two of the six numbers she sang.
Helping to make Saturday night a long to be remembered one by the people of New England were the Duke and his band and Stan Rubin, a Princeton undergraduate whose 'Tigertown' group was dressed in white jackets and Bermuda shorts.
Another high spot of the evening was the singing of Joe Turner, a blues singer with the finale of the night bringing on Satchmo himself to close the night's session in a jam session with all participants taking part.
