WASHINGTON, (AP)—Delegate Bartlett of Alaska reported after a White House call Friday that President Truman said he is still strongly in favor of Statehood for the Territory and will support legislation to bring it about.
Bartlett told reporters the entire government development program in Alaska was discussed and said the President expressed the opinion it was necessary to build up quickly the civilian economy and bring about a population increase.
He said Mr. Truman discussed a proposed government housing program for the Territory and expressed interest in it.
Bartlett said the President also stated that one of the things the Territory needs is a regular steamship service at reasonable rates.
The Alaskan declined to disclose details of various government proposals he and the President discussed.
