Our Country.--It is a glorious thing to carry on one's map of our common country, and trace the survey of the thousands of this new lines of inter-communication by which it is becoming covered as with the filaments of a spider's web,--To trace the main lines of canals and railroads connecting the North and South, the East and the West, and to pick the ramifications by which remote neighborhoods and districts are to be made tributary to the great channels of trade, to follow them to their termination in the heart of the interior, or on the Atlantic shores, is to a patriotic mind an occupation beyond all others delightful and engrossing. To feel convinced that ere long all the petty distinctions and greater sectional adversities of section, the appellation of Eastern and Western man--Southern and Northern--Yankee and Hoosier--Sucker and Long Knife--will be merged in one vast union of patriotism and nationality of American, is indeed cheering. When that shall be the case, the angry feelings consequent upon such unworthy distinctions will disappear, in their stead will spring up the amicable relations that know of no differences, save those between vice and virtue, integrity and dishonesty. How much does it then become the solemn duty of every good-hearted citizen to contribute towards the augmentation of an object so infinitely desirable. Some may suppose that the station which they fill in society is so humble and devoid of influence that they cannot participate in this great work, but they may rely upon it such is not the fact. There is no individual whose weight will not be felt in the great mass of co-operation is not valuable, However insignificant the part he plays, and restricted the sphere of the person who forms one of the many who populate this vast territory, the devotion of his physical and moral energies about the mighty change is of the greatest importance. We take the ground that every laborer who turns up a spadeful of earth in a canal, or strikes a blow in constructing a road, becomes, by so doing, one of the builders of an empire, the battles of which will exist so long as the civilization in which we live shall endure--Behold America.
