STORM CAUSES WIDE HAVOC, S. E. ALASKA

Workmen throughout the Juneau area were working to clear damage wrought by the weekend storm during which wind gusts rose to 56 miles an hour and total rainfall was 2.84 inches.

The storm, which did considerable damage throughout Southeast Alaska, was reported moving inland, in a northerly and easterly direction.

Alaska Communications System reported cable trouble near Sitka. They said they expected to clear it soon.

Roads out of Haines were reported washed out, with all wires down out of Whitehorse.

The winds averaged 52 miles an hour here, sometimes rising higher. A taxicab was stopped completely as it attempted to go up a city hill by a sudden gust. Those who ventured out on foot were bent double by the blast.

The storm hit shipping as far west as Cape St. Elias. The cutter Hemlock, searching for a missing Metlakatla man, was forced to cover, and work on salvage of the Fish and Wildlife Service vessel Eider, aground near Cape Fanshaw, was halted, although resumed again today.

Rainfall was far from record proportions, the top of more than 5 inches in 24 hours being recorded earlier, and at the airport 4.66 inches in 24 hours reported some time ago by the United States weather bureau.

In Sitka, falling trees which took out several power poles in two instances also disrupted Alaska Communications System service for that area.

Three A.C.S. technicians from here have been assigned the job of repairing the broken control cable to the Sitka transmitter station.

Radio Engineer Matt Gormley was booked to fly to Sitka this afternoon by Alaska Coastal, and Sgt. James Gosnell and Pfc. Billy J. Howard are to go by A.C.A. tomorrow morning.

No other serious breaks were reported by Lt. Delbert P. Applegate, Officer in Charge of the Juneau station.
