A letter criticizes the Democrat newspaper's report on a Know Nothing meeting at the Minnesota Court House on the 25th, claiming Mr. Rice's nomination was not by acclamation but manipulated by non-Democrats, Whigs, Free Soilers, and anti-Catholic elements who suppressed Democratic voices and avoided stating principles.

Nothing Nice.
The Democrat of the 26th needs only to be read by those who were present at the Know Nothing meeting at the Court House on the 25th, which nominated Mr. Rice, to see the quintessence of impudence exemplified in a manner more cool, more deliberately perverse, than ever before seen in one issue of any paper in Minnesota. He puts down every delegate from every county represented, and then avows, without qualification, that Mr. Rice was nominated by "acclamation," when it is notorious that a majority of the fairly elected delegates which came here, were against Rice. When it is notorious that nearly every organized, and many unorganized, counties, were represented at the regular Democratic Convention at the Capitol. When it is known that one-fourth of the Rice Know Nothing meeting were Whigs, Free Soilers, and rank defenders of the Catholic Church burners. When it is known that the dark lantern Know Nothing hirelings were sent to the Court House to howl down, and hiss down, and gag down, every sound Democrat who should attempt to be heard, or make a motion, or dare to ask for a platform of Democratic faith. When the Know Nothing Rice cabal adjourned without announcing a single principle, for or against anything—when they have deliberately refused to show the light from their midnight Lodges.
