Will Not Take Commissioner's Decision in the Marstellar Controversy as Final—Sundry Bills Paid
At the regular September meeting of the Pleasantville Board of Education, President Adams in the chair, Members Reed, Leeds, McConnell, Gravelle, Smith and Wilson were present.
A communication from Babcock and Champion, attorneys, together with the decision of the Commissioner of Education in the Marstellar case, the Commissioner reversing the Board's decision, was ordered read and filed.
Prof. Hartman presented a course of study for a four-year high school course, together with a course for manual training, which were adopted by the board.
Upon motion of Mr. Smith, the janitor was instructed to purchase necessary stain and paint the floors in the teachers' room and the office in the High School.
The Supervising Principal was authorized to have the piano moved to a place satisfactory to him at a cost not exceeding $3.
Upon motion of Mr. Wilson, it was ordered that a meeting of the legal voters be called for Tuesday evening, September 16, at 8 o'clock, at School No. 1, for the purpose of voting for or against authorizing the Board of Education to transfer from the unexpended balance of 1912 and 1913 the sum of $2,000 to the item of Manual Training, and $1,500 from the unexpended balance of Current Expenses District Tax to Repairs.
The District Clerk was instructed to advertise for bids for approximately 850 feet of malleable iron fence 54 inches in height, 58-inch pickets, 1½x1 inch channel rail, design to conform in every respect to the ones now in place at No. 1 and No. 2 schools, furnished and erected complete, with one coat of Dixon's graphite paint after erection, the Board to meet September 23rd, to receive the bids.
The Clerk was instructed to forward to the State Federation of Boards of Education dues amounting to $5.
After a short executive session, upon motion of Mr. Reed, the Clerk was instructed to authorize the Board's attorneys to take an appeal in the Marstellar case from the Commissioner's decision dismissing the charges.
The action of the Board at its previous meeting in appointing Howard E. Ott inspector of the building of the cement sidewalks was rescinded.
