A Spirit worthy a free man.
When the Resolve in the Legislature of Connecticut was under consideration, requesting the Governor, in case the Conscription Bill now before Congress or any other bill of a similar character should pass into a law, forthwith to convene the Legislature for to take measures to secure the citizens of that State against such an outrageous violation of their constitutional rights, 23 democrats, and among them the leaders of the minority in the Legislature, voted with the federalists for the resolve, and in declaring the Conscription Law unconstitutional.
The idea of forcing their sons and brothers into the field, says the Connecticut Mirror, is equally repugnant to the feelings of a democrat as to those of a federalist. "I have one son," said one of the most intelligent of the democratic members of the House of Representatives- "if he shall go into the army voluntarily, I do not know that I should object: BUT HE SHALL NEVER GO BY FORCE."-The sentiment was honourable to him as a father, and a friend to the Sovereignty and Independence of his native State.
Of the other sixteen democratic members of the H. of R. six only voted against the resolve, the remainder, ten, were either absent or left their seats.
Whether the leaders of democracy in this State possess that high and sacred regard for the rights and liberties of the people, which those of Connecticut, in this instance manifest, is yet to be seen; but we know this, there are thousands of honest but deceived men of the party who, when they come to see and understand things as they are, will never follow their leaders into slavery and bondage.
