ONCE HERO, NOW THIEF,
COURT EASY WITH HIM
Callahan's Medals for Bravery Save
Him From Long Term in
State's Prison.

George Callahan, twenty-two years
old, of No. 454 Eighth Avenue, twice
decorated for acts of bravery, was
arraigned before Judge Malone in
General Sessions to-day for sentence,
having been convicted of robbery in
the first degree.

Martin O'Brien, his counsel, told
Judge Malone that Callahan was the
victim of evil influence. Mr. O'Brien
said that the youth had started off in
life under the best of conditions but
the honors heaped upon him had
turned his brain. Once he risked his
life trying to save a woman who was
killed by a taxicab and later he saved
a young woman from drowning at
Deal Beach. For each of these acts
he received a medal.

Judge Malone told Callahan that
the extreme penalty for the crime
was twenty years, but because of
his previous good record he would
send him to the penitentiary, where
he will serve a sentence of not less
than six months nor more than three
years.
