In a certain city, in the Mississippi Valley there resides a very wealthy nabob—a second Astor, whose houses and tenements are legion. He employs several agents in different parts of the city, whose duty is solely to rent houses and collect dues. Some days since, a tenant whose 'first quarter' day passed without the first dime of rent, was requested either to fork over or leave the premises. He demurred as a matter of course, but finally agreed to quit and evacuate the house provided his expenses of moving were assumed by the said agent. The agent consulted his employer, and asked how to treat this extraordinary proposition. After some consideration the landlord agreed to the terms, consoling himself with the reflection that it would cost much more if he resorted to more stringent measures to get rid of his unprofitable tenant. Accordingly the expenses of the moving were assumed, and the tenant very honorably complied with his agreement, and left the said tenement. But what was the landlord's mortification to learn from another agent that the same individual had rented and taken possession of another of his tenements on a different street. He had lost three months rent, paid the expenses of moving, and had the pleasant prospect of another loss of equal amount, besides being most gloriously hoaxed and swindled.
