Full Text

The Suggestions in some foreign Gazettes as if the Crown of Spain had Views upon a certain Fortress, are so utterly inconsistent with what the same Papers insinuate concerning the Disposition of the Court of Madrid to conclude a Treaty with that of Vienna, and that of Turin, as makes the first-mentioned Supposition altogether incredible. For if Spain is really disposed to enter into a sincere Friendship with the House of Austria, and to take the most proper Measures for securing the Repose of Italy, She has no Need to be uneasy in Respect to that Port and Fortress; because the present Possessors would be entirely in her Interest; and therefore their continuing to hold it would be for the Advantage of his Catholick Majesty, and his Subjects. In short, there is but one Way to reconcile these two Pieces of News; which is, to believe the Spaniards sincere in their Resentments, and entering into these Treaties only by Way of Amusement.
