The Love of Country.
"Tis the sound of a voice,
The chime of a bell,
A clearing in a wood.
A sunbeam on the plain;
'Tis a certain roof, 'neath a certain sky,
And the measured step of townsmen on the bank. . . .
'Tis the smell of the grass around a pond
And scent of the dust on the road.
"Tis a timid movement, a furtive glance,
A vision of the past, gone by in a flash. . . .
Tis all we cannot say
And all that we can feel,
All that only can be told
In singing. . . .
The glimmer of leaves and the smell of the wind,
"Tis the sound of a voice,
The chime of a bell,
A clearing in a wood.
A sunbeam on the plain;
'Tis a certain roof, 'neath a certain sky,
And the measured step of townsmen on the bank. . . .
'Tis the smell of the grass around a pond
And scent of the dust on the road.
"Tis a timid movement, a furtive glance,
A vision of the past, gone by in a flash. . . .
Tis all we cannot say
And all that we can feel,
All that only can be told
In singing. . . .
