GROWTH OF THE COUNTRY.
Belvidere Village, is situated on the Northwest angle of Tewksbury on the east bank
of Concord river, near its confluence with
the Merrimac. The first separating it from
the land and building of the Merrimac Manufacturing Company in Chelmsford, which
are in full view. Belvidere (as the name
imports) affords some of the most elegant
picturesque views of land and water that can
be found in the country, and most convenient
sites for buildings. Three years ago there
were but two Dwelling-Houses and not a
Store or shop of any kind on the place,
where there are now nearly thirty buildings,
consisting of Dwelling-Houses, Stores and
Shops, with a fulling-mill, grist-mill, dyehouse, school-house and large Hotel; and
about a dozen more buildings are contemplated to be erected, as the lots have been
purchased or agreed for.
The healthiness of the situation, and local
advantages, the immense water powers in
the vicinity, the facility of building and procuring excellent wells of water, with the
advantages offered to all kinds of Mechanics,
together with the high price paid for house
rent, which, of course, must always be the
case in all growing places, will essentially
contribute to accelerate its rapid increase.
And the supposition is not more extravagant,
that, in twenty years, there will be five hundred buildings in the town, than three years
ago, it would have been to have predicted
that at this time there would be as many
buildings as there are.
There are some useful mechanics established, but many others are wanted, and
would find lucrative employments. There is
not a single hatter, nor a cooper, wheelwright, tanner, or tallow-chandler. Cattle
are slaughtered in abundance, but the hides
and tallow are carried to a distance to be
manufactured, Carpenters, masons, stone
layers, painters and labourers of every description occasionally come.
It is needless to enumerate all the different kinds of mechanics that might be sufficiently employed, and, if industrious, would
not fail to grow wealthy.
Bricks are made near the village, and from
appearances the clay is inexhaustible. Some
of it is supposed to be suitable for pottery.
and an establishment of this kind is to be expected.
A curious spring has been discovered near
the clay pits, but as the water has not been
analysed, the qualities are unknown.—It
smells of brimstone.
