"We have never witnessed so high a degree of electioneering spirit in this town, as was displayed by the supporters of captain Crowninshield. Their efforts were not solely directed to the distributing of votes for their candidate.
Besides possessing themselves of the avenues to the Court-House Chamber for that purpose, much pains were taken to impress the public mind with an abhorrence of Mr. Read: among other means, his name was printed, and circulated, with the arms of Great Britain attached, thereby insinuating, by a figure much stronger than words could express, that Mr. Read was ready to sacrifice the interests of his own country to those of Britain. The issue of the election shows how successful these base measures have been."
Mr. Nathan Read, of Danvers, was the FEDERAL candidate; and a captain Crowninshield, of Salem, was his opponent—supported by all the pestilent jacobins, the trimmers, and IMPARTIALISTS—It is probable the latter candidate is ELECTED.
