GALILEO DISTURBANCE.

Our readers have been apprised that, early in November last, the Mayor of New Orleans received an anonymous letter, communicating information calculated to produce an impression that a serious disturbance was in agitation in that city or its vicinity. Little reliance appears to have been placed on the anonymous information thus communicated further than to induce a greater watchfulness on the part of the civil authority. Subsequent advices, however, have strengthened, if not confirmed, the suggestion of the anonymous letter writer.

The Baton Rouge Gazette, of the 15th inst. received by the last mail, contains the following information on this subject:

Petersburg Republican
A MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR.

Through the politeness of a gentleman who arrived this morning in the steam boat Eagle, from New Orleans, we learn that the anonymous communication made some time since to the Mayor of that city, was the disclosure of a plot—but the object of which we have not been made acquainted with—but about 40 white men and 60 blacks were encamped ten miles above New Orleans, at a distance of four miles from the river, and had 3000 stand of arms with them. On the immediate discovery of this, last Thursday, between 12 and 2 o'clock, P.M. all the steam boats at New Orleans were ordered to lie in readiness for public service; twenty five men were drafted from each company in the city and 200 men were sent up on Thursday evening in the Eagle; the Fayette, also, which passed this town in the night, has brought troops to the same place.

From the vigilance of the authorities, and the readiness of the militia of New Orleans, we are to conclude that, before this, the plan of revolt, if any was in existence, must have been defeated. We were informed, that the Mayor derives his information from a free man of color.

This should be a lesson to the inhabitants of all the parishes in the state, and an inducement to them to put in force the vagrant laws, which in many places are a dead letter; it will also, probably, call the serious attention of our legislature to a penitentiary. Numberless strolling would find a convenient resting place for a few months in a house of the kind, and the public at large would be benefitted.

The new steam boat Natchez passed by about 11 o'clock this day. She left New Orleans yesterday morning. The passengers who were landed here, have given us no further information respecting the above affair.
