Extract of a letter from a person of intelligence, in the Cherokee country dated March 7, 1784.
The news of the Governor of North Carolina, or some private adventurers, attempting to purchase the Muscle-Shoals, and great bend of Cherokee river, has been made known among all the Southern Nations. A strong guard of Creek Indians, has been posted in that part of the country, all the fall and winter, to prevent even explorers of those parts to pass; and you may be assured that a few bales of clothing and trumpery, given to the upper towns people, will go but a little way in getting possession of a favorite spot; in which Chickamoggas, Creeks, and Chickasaws all deem themselves deeply interested.
