Declares Gary SS Wet But Wants Workers Dry for Own Gain

WASHINGTON—Motives of Elbert H. Gary, head of the United States Steel corporation, in leading the movement for formation of a national crime commission were questioned Friday by Capt. W. H. Stayton, chairman of the Association Against the Prohibition Amendment.

Capt. Stayton charged that the steel corporation head was not himself a practicing prohibitionist and that he habitually served wine at his own dinners.

Serves Wine in Home.

He asserted that in his support of prohibition and its enforcement, Mr. Gary was primarily dominated by a desire to get the utmost economic energy out of the large army of American industrial workers without consideration of their personal rights and privileges.

"Is Mr. Gary personally a prohibitionist?" said Capt. Stayton. "One may say that neither he nor his family are professing or practicing prohibitionists in their private lives. They habitually serve cocktails to their guests at luncheons and at dinners. Wines accompany practically every meal at which guests are present. So far as we know, Mr. Gary's is now the only great house where champagne is habitually served at luncheons.

"Good for Workingman,"

"Since then, Mr. Gary is not a personal prohibitionist, we may ask why he preaches the doctrine. He is perfectly frank in saying that he does not want it for himself, but he believes it is a good thing for the workingman.

"If prohibition is good for the workingman, it must be because it may make him more orderly and law-abiding, or it may result in his doing better work and giving his employer an increased output."
