WILLIAMSBURG, October 7th.

On Wednesday Evening the Hon. Edmond Atkin, Esq; his Majesty's Superintendant of Indian Affairs, in the Southern District, returned from the Western Frontiers of this Dominion, having, we hear, settled Affairs with the Cherokees in those Parts entirely to Satisfaction, and entered into the same Regulation with them as before with the Catawbas, for their future Assistance; so that if those Measures are supported, it may be supposed the back Inhabitants, will have little to fear from the Enemy's Parties for the future. The several Parties of those Indians went Home, in the best Disposition imaginable. While they were employed in those Parts, they scouted so near Fort Du Quene, as to kill the Enemy Indians in sight of it, by which the back Inhabitants were rendered quiet and easy; but as soon as those Parties were gone, the Enemy's Indians made an Eruption into the Settlements on the South Branch of Potowmack, and killed and carried off many of the Settlers; which shews the Necessity of keeping and relieving Parties of our Indians.

It is indeed the Catawbas who were sent for to succeed Tite arrived in those Parts.
