"The only news at present here, is the talk of war between England and France. On Saturday morning arrived here from Madeira, a King's messenger, accompanied by a Spanish gentleman immediately. The only British Packet we had here, was ordered to sail that very evening--the Captain of which made answer, that he could not get his vessel in readiness, being in want of water. He was then a second time ordered to get his vessel in readiness by the next morning, otherwise they would have him confined, and take up the first merchant vessel they could get. It is said, that the alliance is signed by Spain and England, to go against France. We are preparing eight ships of the line and six frigates. The Algerines have proposed a peace with this country. Pray ship nothing on board French vessels. If there is any on the way, it is ten to one that they will be taken."
