By a Gentleman lately returned from England, we hear that the Duke of GRAFTON, in a long and pertinent Speech on the Necessity of the additional Tax upon Window Lights concluded thus, with his Eyes upon Mr. PITT. viz.
The Occasion of my resigning the Seals, as one of his Majesty's principal Secretaries of State, has occasioned many Surmises, Conjectures & Reports, all of which are equally injurious to my Honor and Reputation. It has been confidently asserted that I resigned my Employments through an insuperable Dislike and Aversion to Business. It has also, My Lords, been ascribed to an inordinate Love of Pleasures and other Courses, which (from my SOUL) I abhor! And it has been imputed to a Misunderstanding and Want of Confidence in the Lords and Gentlemen with whom I was so lately joined in Administration. But, My Lords, I now declare and aver, upon my Honour and Truth (yea my SALVATION!) that my Resignation of Office took Rise from no such Motives or Considerations.
My Lords, I have chosen to withdraw from the publick Concerns of this Nation until that MAN shall be called upon to take the Helm of Government in his Hand; who I believe alone capable of restoring the lost and ruined Dignity of these Kingdoms: And my Lords I trust and firmly believe that the Time is not far distant, and when it does come, if HE shall think me worthy, I shall be willing to serve under Him in a subaltern and subordinate Station.
