Damage Is Estimated at $60,000 to $65,000 but Is Amply Covered by Insurance.
RICHMOND, Va., Dec. 27.—Fire originating in the northeast corner of the fourth floor early Sunday morning destroyed the north wing of Ryland Hall, the main building of the Richmond College group, also seriously damaging the central part of the building. The damage is estimated at from $60,000 to $65,000, but is amply covered by insurance.
The origin of the fire is a mystery the only theory being that a cigarette stump may have been dropped by some student. The alarm in the building was given shortly after 4 o'clock by three ministerial students who had had rooms on the fourth floor.
A cry in the hall at the same time aroused other students sleeping in the building, and all made a dash for the stairway and discovered their escape to be cut off there by the flames.
By the time the engine arrived the students had made their escape down the fire escapes.
It has been announced by the college authorities that dormatories and lecture rooms will be rented near the campus and the institution will operate some time after the holidays.
