New York, April 18.-Remarkable results have been attained with the latest model of 5-inch guns, the test of which is in progress at Indian Head proving grounds. Rear Admiral O'Neil, chief of ordnance, has been informed by Lieutenant Strauss, in charge of the proving grounds that the gun had developed a maximum velocity of 2830 feet a second. This velocity was given to a 50-pound projectile.
The great superiority of the new weapon over the 5-inch gun on the Kearsarge is the maximum velocity attained. With a 50-pound projectile fired by the latter the velocity was 2550 feet second. With a 60-pound shell a velocity of 2000 feet a second has been attained with the latest model. Rear Admiral O'Neil has determined to use the 60-pound projectile.
