The Lynchburg Virginian says:-
"The Whigs of the revolution did not stop to calculate the chances of defeat, when two or three millions of people set themselves in array against a power, compared with which, Rome, in the height of her conquest and glory, was not to be mentioned. Defeat and disaster crowding thick and fast upon them did not paralyze their energies, nor cause them to trail their banner in the dust. Let us take courage and acquit ourselves like men who deserve success. Let us close the ranks of that once serried host that of old went forth to battle under the most glorious political leader ever vouchsafed to any party; like him prefer defeat to dishonor: resistance to submission. Let us afford to the young men of the country an opportunity of casting their maiden votes for good men with good principles, rather than for good men with unsound political opinions."
