School Lunch Attack
The Board of Education for the Virgin Islands, which was hand picked by Governor Alexander and given very extensive powers, along with the Assistant Commissioner, to hire and fire, and to determine policies for the department, has requested church schools to pay the salaries of the lunch workers attached to those institutions. The cost is estimated at $15,000. The decision was said to be necessary because of lack of funds.
The officials of the schools who are being called upon to pay the salaries of these government employees have protested, and we support them 100 per cent.
Why should these schools, which are already carrying a huge portion of the government's burden, be saddled with additional expenses which they cannot afford? Why should children who are attending the Catholic schools be required to go without school lunches if the drastic policy instituted by the Board of Education forces these schools to discontinue the program?
This school lunch program has been in effect for more than ten years. There were times during that period when neither municipality had an extra dime in the treasury. But such drastic and unreasonable proposals were never put forth. Today when there
