LONDON, Ont. -- BRT accomplishments for the men it represents came in for generous praise recently from two veteran members who joined the Brotherhood on the same day 50 years ago and were awarded their 50-year pins at a special meeting of Lodge 415.
Honored at the meeting and praising BRT achievements were Laskey P. Johnston, 73, and John J. Mansell, 71.
Johnston and Mansell, who have been lifelong friends, said that as far as they know they are the only persons living who attended their initiation in 1904.
"We are quite thrilled in receiving these pins. We have been looking forward to it for quite a while," declared the two oldtimers.
Johnston also was presented a purse and Mansell received a cigarette lighter.
Beginning his rail career on the old Lake Erie & Detroit River Railway in 1902, Johnston, who resides at 1052 William St., came to the Canadian Pacific two years later as a brakeman. He was a conductor from 1911 until he retired April 1, 1946.
He joined Forest City Lodge 240 June 12, 1904 and transferred to London Lodge 415 in 1906.
Mansell, of 765 Princess Ave., started railroading in 1900 as a brakeman on Grand Trunk Railway. He went to Chicago where he did yard and passenger work four and one-half years.
He became a yardmaster with CPR in 1909 in London and retired as yard foreman in 1947.
LASKEY P. JOHNSTON, center, of Lodge 415, London, Ont., has a 50-year button pinned on his lapel, as John J. Mansell, left awaits his turn for a similar honor, at a recent special meeting of the lodge. Both Johnston and Mansell, longtime pals, joined the BRT on the same day—June 12, 1904.
