CHICAGO—(NNPA) Illinois State Representative Corneal A. Davis declared Wednesday that an edict issued several weeks ago by the head of the Prince Hall Masons of Illinois, barring master Masons from participating in activities of the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, will prevent the holding of a planned charity event in East St. Louis, Illinois.
Davis, Imperial Deputy of the Desert of Illinois Shriners, said the annual Illinois gala day celebration scheduled for June in East St. Louis, has been cancelled because of an order issued by Dr. F. Curtis Rogan forbidding master Masons from taking part in Shrine activities other than paying dues and keeping up property.
Davis said the celebration, a Shrine promotion, was planned to raise funds for a sorely needed hospital in East St. Louis for colored mothers.
The Shrine leader testified before Master in Chancery Daniel Carmell during a hearing on a suit for an injunction restraining all Illinois Masons from obeying Rogan's order.
The Shrine suit for an injunction was filed April 1 in Federal District Court here and asked $50,000 damages jointly from Dr. Rogan and the Illinois grand lodge.
