Spring Shoe Styles To Feature Open Heels, Toes

NEW YORK, Jan 3 -(INS) - Feminine heels will be exposed to the balmy April breezes and open-toed shoes will be terrific. This forecast for femme shoes was made today from a preview of 1939 styles.

Back-straps and open heels will be featured in most of the spring shoes and the toe openings will be slightly smaller than in previous seasons.

Closed toes shoes have a definite toe interest a modern touch that takes away the old-fashioned look from the closed toe. This toe interest will be given by walled toes, square toes or flat bow trimmings, and anything that tends to shorten the vamp will be important. Flat bows and an illusion of smallness to the shoes and will be widely used.

Designers have concentrated on heels for the spring season and low heels are assuming a character that never existed before.

Trend Toward Lower Heels

There is a definite trend toward lower heels as they have become vastly more interesting.

New novelty heels also have been created, including, one extending almost to the sole of the shoe; another, a medium height wedge-shaped heel with a circular opening in the center: also the five-cornered geometric heel and the built up leather heel featured in tailored models. Saddle stitching trims the geometric heel in tailored shoes and is also important when used as a toe interest on closed-toe models.

Platform soles are going out, but they will still be important in low-heel and tailored-type shoes.

Tailored Shoe Trimmings

A wine platform and wine flat bows are used as trimming on blue tailored shoes. One design features a double-deck platform shoe the platform sole extending from the heel to the toe with the space under the arch left open. This shoe is definitely "high style", and is not expected to be widely worn.

Dressmaker touches . . . shirring, pleating and draping . . are executed in kidskin, an important leather revival. Patent leather will be used for most black shoes, while calfskin will be the leather for tailored and street wear.

Shoes of sueded pigskin and alligator in pastels and bright new shades are especially attractive, and there are some in mesh with a patent lacquer finish. Wine mesh has a blue lacquer, or any number of color combinations may be worked out.

Mesh insets on calfskin or sueded pigskin are clever and cool trimmings.

Emphasis on Color

Emphasis is being placed on color with brown being definitely out. Tan has a more reddish tint, a trend away from the yellow cast of previous years. Admiralty blue, with a purple cast, is a choice selection, while Baby Cherry, a reddish wine, is expected to be a spring favorite. Black will be worn as much as in previous years.

Shoe designs will be a little bolder, but not quite as ornate or feminine as in the past. Lines will be a little heavier looking.

Sandals, however, will be mainly imagination . . . toeless, heelless, and with straps across the instep. These innovations, coupled with the new use of fabrics and leather, will give 1939 shoes a doubly new look.
