Mrs. Garnett Files
For Commissioner;
States Her Policies
Mrs. Irene Garnett of Polson has announced her candidacy for county commissioner. She filed Jan. 4 on the Republican ticket, and last Saturday she was in St. Ignatius in the interest of her candidacy. The POST acknowledges a pleasant call.
In connection with her filing, Mrs. Garnett has issued a statement which is in part as follows:
"I have been a resident of Polson since August 1950, when my husband and I purchased the Coffee Parlor, which we operated until 1954. After selling out, I spent two years in Missoula as Residence Halls Housing secretary at M. S. U. From February 1958 until April 1959, was employed with the J. M. Clemshaw Appraisal Company in the revaluation of Lake County properties. Since May 1959, have been setting up these records for use in the assessor's office.
"I have a thorough knowledge of how this work was done, how values were arrived at, and how the revaluation will operate for the equalization of taxes when the program is complete. During these past two years of continuous work with several offices at the Court House, I have become acquainted with many other matters that are most important to the welfare of the county as a whole.
"I am a business college graduate, I have had special training in business administration and office management. I have spent the last seventeen years employed in one phase of business or another. I have no axe to grind in seeking this election. Nothing to gain but the satisfaction of contributing time and effort to aid in the administration of county affairs in a way that everyone will benefit.
"I believe in equal and impartial service to all taxpayers, and shall work, with all my heart, for efficient and economical disposition of the duties and responsibilities of a county commissioner.
"My sincere wish is that before the voters make up their minds about a woman being a candidate for this office, they will permit me to talk with them and to answer some of the questions that may have arisen."
Mrs. Garnett is the wife of Howard R. Garnett of Polson. He and Mrs. Garnett came to Lake county in 1950; prior to that they lived in Idaho. Mrs. Garnett states that her motto is "To make promises sparingly; to keep them faithfully," and her pledge: "To serve the people of Lake County with honest, unselfish devotion in all matters pertaining to this office."
