Full Text

There was an improvement, yesterday, in the condition of Mrs. Matthews, the woman who was assaulted by her step-son.

The wounds are healing rapidly and the unfavorable symptoms have abated. The critical period was on Wednesday and Thursday. This being passed, she will probably recover.

Charles Matthews, who struck his step-mother with a flat-iron, remains in his cell most of the time and talks but very little. He asked one of his acquaintances, who was in to visit him yesterday, to ascertain how his step-mother was, and if she was dead or likely to die to procure him two ounces of laudanum.
