The old Globe clique, having fixed their legs about the Poke's neck, have already commenced their habitual and natural practice of "dragging to the stake," and "riding over rough shod," every man who will not bow down and worship them.
We clip the following specimen of their purposes as regards the President and his friends, from the N. Y. Plebeian, the Poke organ in its locality:
Let John Tyler retire to private life, from a station occupied by accident, and which nature never qualified him to fill with honor to himself or advantage to his country. Let him at least act honest for the remainder of the term, and posterity may do justice to his motives; and he will, in part, atone for the many wrongs his country has suffered at his hands. Certain it is, that neither party, nor any considerable portion of the American people, irrespective of party, has the least confidence either in his ability or honesty, to conduct the affairs of the nation in a manner creditable to the Executive of a great and free nation, or beneficial to the people.
Perhaps no man in the country could occupy the office of President, whether obtained by accident or the choice of the people, no matter how corrupt or unworthy he may be, but would find some supporters; and we candidly confess that John Tyler has as few as could consistently be expected, considering the corrupt use he has made of the power the station gives him in operating on the corrupt, the ignorant, and the deluded. We make these remarks from no feeling of malevolence toward President Tyler, or those who still cling to him in his downward career. We have no respect for the man, when taken in connection with the office he holds.
Surely it will not be presumptuous in us to intimate that the peculiar supporters of Col. Polk, should neither retain nor ask for "Tyler help."
