January 5.
In the Senate today, Mr. Dix, from the Committee on Commerce, reported a bill for improving the harbors of New York. Mr. Underwood presented a bill for granting portions of public lands to the State of Arkansas. Mr. Atchison reported a bill granting public lands for a railroad in Missouri. The resolution previously introduced by Mr. Miller, calling on the President for any correspondence relating to the purchase of Cuba, was then taken up, and Mr. Miller advocated its adoption. Mr. Rusk inquired of the Senator if he had any reason to suspect that such a correspondence was now in existence. Mr. Miller: I will, at all times and on all occasions. Mr. Foote replied: The Senator will be in an awkward position three months hence, as Gen. Taylor was decidedly in favor of annexation. A motion was put to lay the resolution on the table and decided in the affirmative. Senate went into executive session.
In the House, Mr. Boyd made a minority report in the Committee on Elections, against Mr. Libby taking his seat. The report was laid on the table and ordered to be printed. Mr. Hammond made a motion to take up the private calendar. Lost. The House went into Committee of the Whole and took up the bill to establish a Board of Commissioners to investigate private claims against the U. S. government. Messrs. Strong and B. Win spoke against it. Mr. Mead attempted to amend it, as also did Mr. Schenk, who was in favor of changing the present mode. The House adjourned.
