Challenge Between Butler and Colonel Benton.
St. Louis, Aug. 18, 1848.
Washington, August 17th.—A challenge passed between Butler, (probably, Senator Butler of South Carolina,) and Col. Benton, of Missouri. The provocation was,—words spoken in debate. They were both arrested by the proper authorities. Benton refused to give bail. The case was heard by Judge Crawford. The evidence against the parties being insufficient for conviction, they were discharged. Mr. Mangum was summoned as a witness.
