Cumberland, July 13—A charter has been granted to the employees of the Cumberland Box Co., South Cumberland, by the United Furniture Workers of America-CIO. It is announced by Louis Gilbert, International Representative, and Horace B. Davis, Western Md. CIO Council Field Representative.
When 80% of the company's 29 employees had joined up, they lost no time in electing a bargaining committee and asking bargaining rights for the union. A conference was held July 13, with President Fulcher P. Smith and Manager F. Perry Smith, Jr., of the company, in attendance. Mrs. Jewel G. Briggs, Field Examiner for the National Labor Relations Board, said that an election might be held before the end of the month.
The workers, many of whom are receiving a wage of 35 cents per hour, aim not only at a wage increase but at a big improvement in working conditions. They maintain that the antiquated machines now in use are a menace to life and limb. The company formerly made peach-boxes but lately has manufactured numerous boxes for the Kelly Co.
