A gentleman of this city, who was stopping at the Palace Hotel, San Francisco, on the Fourth of July, tells the following ridiculous story on Lord Loftus, the recently appointed Governor of New South Wales, who has been sojourning on the borders of Lake Tahoe for a few days.
During Independence Day the bombs that were being fired on the street in front of the hotel made a fearful and incessant noise, greatly to the disgust of his lordship. He rang for a bell boy and ordered him to have an end put to the noise.
"I cannot do it, your lordship," replied the bell boy.
"Well," asked his lordship, "is there no place in town where I can find a little quiet and peace from this barbaric noise?"
"I do not think so, sir; I do not believe you can find a place in the Union to-day that is exempt from the noise you hear here. We call this Independence Day in this country."
"Hang Independence Day!" emphatically remarked Lord Loftus. "It is strange that a British gentleman's comfort is not taken into consideration in this barbaric country."
With that he slammed the door in the servant's face, and filled his ears with cotton to exclude the "distasteful noise."
