Full Text

Notwithstanding there was a very large number of people assembled around the State House yesterday to observe the proceedings of the convention, there was no disorder. No one saw any necessity for a police officer, and although some of the most important public and some of the most exciting private interests were soon to be determined, there was nothing to indicate any other sentiments than those of a desire to perform a duty or abide by a conclusion arrived at by representatives chosen by the people.

In many of the wards there were disputes and indecision on the right of certain delegates to seats, but angry voices were not heard, and only the decision of the committee on credentials desired. That body will report to-day, and then, no doubt, perfect harmony will prevail.

Inside the rail, even before organization order was perfect, only delegates were first admitted, but to Mr. Hillman the reporters are indebted for arrangements for their convenience, without which they would have been very uncomfortable.

The necessary preliminary business was easily arranged by Colonel Lewis, the chairman, and Mr. Quete, the secretary of the parish committee, assisted by Mr. Charles A. Baquie, and the election of Mr. Herbert put the convention in working condition.

Nothing particular was done except the appointment of the two necessary committees on organization and credentials, and their report to-day will inaugurate the real work.
