The State Convention.

The union convention at Bangor, last week, was the largest ever held in the State. It was a gathering made up from among the best men in the state. Over twelve hundred delegates were present. Norumbega Hall, one of the largest in New England, was crammed full during the sittings of the convention. The members of this meeting came together, actuated by an excellent spirit. No party feeling manifested itself, beyond the great overshadowing idea of country. The most radical republican, for the time being was willing to abandon all party names for the sake of uniting all loyal men upon a common platform in support of the national administration and a vigorous prosecution of the war. In that convention were a large number of men who have acted with the democratic party up to the present time. Under the liberal call of the State committee, they came into the convention and expressed a determination to act hereafter in union with the loyal men of Maine. The patriotic spirit of these war democrats was promptly responded to by the republicans by conceding to them the candidate. Precedent gave the nomination to Gov. Coburn, but none of his friends claimed it upon that ground. The informal ballot clearly indicated the choice of the Convention in the person of Judge Cony of Augusta. Upon the second ballot, he received nearly all the votes, and his nomination was subsequently made unanimous. The speeches in the convention made principally by loyal democrats, were of the right stamp, loyal to the core. This great meeting carried with it the prestige of success. Judge Cony's election is just as certain, as any event in the future can be, and that too by twelve or fifteen thousand majority. By the action of this convention a square, direct issue is made with the democrats. It nominates a member of their own party, a union man-for Governor. If they are honest in their professions of loyalty, they will vote for him. There can be but two parties in the next State election, the party for the government and the union, and the party opposed to it. Judge Cony will be the standard bearer of the former, Benj. Bradbury, of the latter. The people will judge between them and the principles they represent. The contest will end in a glorious triumph for the union forces against the friends and sympathisers of treason and rebellion.
