The season has opened at Great Falls with a regular building boom. On all sides there are signs of progress. The construction of the great Boston & Montana copper smelter and of the dam across the Missouri is accompanied by the building of the railroad to Canada and the double track railroad to the smelter. Massive blocks are going up in the business districts. Fine residences are being built in large number on the north and south sides, as well as in the additions. Large alterations are being made in stores in order to make more room for goods. The union railroad depot will soon be under way and will add greatly to the general appearance of the city, whose future is now assured. In addition to these buildings are many which are projected and will soon be commenced, both in town and in the additions. All this progress is sound. It is not speculative nor based on a boom, but on sound business principles and will confer lasting benefits.
BUILDINGS AND REALTY.
William Roberts Takes the Contract For the Gibson Block,
Phil Gibson has accepted the offer of William Roberts to build the Gibson block on First avenue South for $18,000. Mr. Roberts will do the work with his customary ability and promptitude.
E. B. Largent has sold an interest in the island which he owned in the Missouri, above town, to H. O. Chowen, Dr. Gordon, Dr. Crutcher and E. S. McCord. He retains one-fifth interest. The consideration for the other four-fifths is $4,000. The island has an area of 50 acres.
The hill near the high school is being peopled rapidly. The new dwellings are spacious and elegant.
Capt. Hoyt has sold to Messrs. Dickerman, Webster and Crutcher a lot at the corner of First avenue north and Third street for $5,000. This is one of several valuable lots owned by the captain. Four or five years ago, when stationed in Montana, he invested $1,000 in Great Falls, and his property here is worth today $25,000. At that early day he made up his mind that Great Falls would be an important city. Meeting Mr. Paris Gibson one day the captain handed him a check for $1,000 with the injunction to invest it for him in Great Falls to the best possible advantage. He did not see his lots until a long time after, but he was lucky to entrust the matter at that time to Mr. Gibson's good judgment. Capt. Hoyt is now stationed at Jefferson Barracks, Mo., but he is likely to visit Great Falls before long
